Danseonghyanggyo Local Confucian School was founded during the reign of King Injong of Goryeo to enshrine and pay tribute to the tablets of virtuous Confucian scholars and to educate and edify the local people. During the reign of King Sejong of Joseon it was moved to its present site in Gyo-dong, and until the 18th century the Daeseongjeon Hall, its main shrine hall, served only a ritual function. In 1725 the ridge beam of Myeongnyundang Hall was raised, and construction was completed in 1728, giving the school its full form. Myeongnyundang Hall of Danseonghyanggyo has undergone several repairs since its reconstruction in 1725, but it still retains a distinctive floor plan that incorporates the form of a pavilion. Its unusual roof shape, resembling the Chinese character 工 (gong), and its timber-frame construction are rarely found elsewhere, giving the building great historical and academic value.
