Daeseongjeon Hall of Miryang Local Confucian School

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krMiryanghyanggyo is a leading example of the side-by-side (byeongnyeol-sik) layout of Confucian schools, in which the shrine stands to the left and the lecture hall to the right (jwamyo-uhak). Among the roughly thirty Confucian schools of Gyeongsangnam-do, only four, including Geochanghyanggyo, adopt this side-by-side layout, setting them apart from the other schools, which use the more common in-line (jikryeol-sik) layout; Miryanghyanggyo is moreover the only one among them where Daeseongjeon Hall and Myeongnyundang Hall face in different directions. Daeseongjeon Hall of Miryanghyanggyo burned down during the Imjin War and was rebuilt in 1602, making it a comparatively early example. Although it was relocated twice more, in 1617 and in 1820, old timber members were reused in the columns, ikgong brackets and door and window frames, so that the early building techniques of the mid-Joseon period are well preserved.
