Dongmu ‧seomu‧sin Sammun Gate of Gyeongju Local Confucian School
경주향교 동무‧서무‧신삼문 · 慶州鄕校 東廡‧西廡‧神三門

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Dongmu and Seomu of Gyeongju Local Confucian School have stood since their reconstruction in 1604, with repairs in 1829 and 1995, and together with the Daeseongjeon Hall they form the ritual space of the school. At twelve bays across the front, they are the longest mu (side halls flanking a Confucian shrine's forecourt) surviving among Korea's hyanggyo, with a generous bay span and an extremely restrained use of decoration. The Sinsammun Gate is a three-bay-wide, two-bay-deep, three-purlin (samnyangga) gable-roofed building. In the form of its flat three-doored gate (pyeongsammun) and in details such as its door leaves, door frames and hongsal (vermilion-painted lattice bars), it stands as a historical model for the spirit gate of a hyanggyo's ritual space, and the stonework of its platform and foundation stones, together with the working and style of members such as the sinbangmok (threshold timber) and daegong (king post), display archaic characteristics.
