Suncheon Local Confucian School had a school established during the reign of King Seongjong of Goryeo; in the Honam region only Suncheon, Naju and Jeonju had such schools at that time. Because of this importance and standing, it was established in 1407 as the local Confucian school of Suncheon Protectorate, overseeing the Confucian schools of neighbouring counties and districts such as Yeosu, Gwangyang and Dolsan. Suncheonhyanggyo is known to have first been built in 1407, but the ridge-beam inscription on the underside of the purlin of the present Daeseongjeon Hall, its main shrine hall, dates to 1649. When the building was relocated in 1780, its major timber members were moved and reused as they were, and when it was relocated again in 1801 most of the members were again reused to rebuild it at the same scale, so the building's construction date can be taken as 1649. Daeseongjeon has five bays across the front and three bays along the side, with an open front veranda; compared with the Daeseongjeon halls of other Confucian schools, it is grand and outstanding in scale, structure, style and design. The bracket sets at front and rear are identically composed of ox-head-shaped bracket arms, in a form with two outward-projecting tiers and three wing-shaped arms, with brackets placed only above the columns — a construction classified as column-head bracketing. This bracket composition suggests that the building's date could be pushed back to the 1700s or even earlier. Daeseongjeon of Suncheonhyanggyo is a mid-17th-century Confucian building with a clearly documented history, and together with Daeseongjeon of Najuhyanggyo it can be considered representative timber architecture of the Honam region. Its distinctive bracket form, together with its simple, unadorned timber-frame technique, clearly reflects the character of its period and the features of late Joseon Confucian architecture, giving it sufficient academic and historical value to be designated a state-designated cultural heritage item (treasure).
