Garimseong Fortress in Buyeo is a stone fortress built near the lower reaches of the Geumgang River to defend Ungjinseong and Sabiseong, the capitals of Baekje. From the top of the mountain, the area around the lower Geumgang, including Ganggyeong-eup, can be seen in a single view. It is said to have been built in the 23rd year of King Dongseong of Baekje (501) by Baekga, who held the office of wisajwapyeong. According to the Samguk sagi, Baekga, who had built the fortress, bore a grudge against King Dongseong for sending him there, and murdered the king and raised a rebellion; but when King Muryeong ascended the throne he suppressed the rebellion and put Baekga to death. That a high official holding the rank of wisajwapyeong was set to guard the fortress attests to its strategic importance. The fortress is of the tteomoe type, its wall built encircling the top of the mountain using both stone and earth. Within the fortress remain the sites of the south, west and north gates, a military granary site, three well sites, and stone-built earthworks used for defence. This site was also a stronghold of the Baekje restoration movement, and it contains a shrine where rites are held every year in memory of Yu Geum-pil, a general of the early Goryeo period, who is said to have stopped here to give relief to the poor. This fortress is the only Baekje-period fortification whose construction date can be established with certainty, and it is a highly important site for what it reveals about an old place name. The name has been changed from Buyeo Seongheungsanseong Fortress to Garimseong Fortress, Buyeo (announced 28 July 2011).
