Gongsanseong Fortress, Gongju
공주 공산성 · 公州 公山城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krWhen Baekje lost its first capital in 475 the court came south to this ridge above the Geum river and held out here for the next sixty-three years. The wall runs around the valley for roughly 800 metres east to west, and inside it archaeologists have found building platforms that look like a palace. It was earth when Baekje built it and stone when Joseon rebuilt it, so what you walk on is layered. Two of the four gates survive — Jinnamnu to the south, Gongbungnu to the north — and the east and west gates were reconstructed in 1993. Look for the hidden gate, the flanking towers and the water outlet along the circuit. The same hill sheltered two kings. Uija stopped here briefly after Baekje fell in 660, and the resistance movement used it as a base. In 1623 King Injo fled a rebellion and came to the same ridge.
