Namgoru Embankment, Gyeongju
경주 남고루 · 慶州 南古壘

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is an earthen rampart, a defensive structure running from the southern entrance of Daereungwon Ancient Tombs in Gyeongju eastwards around the Hwango-dong tomb cluster and then north as far as Bukcheon Stream. Much of it has been destroyed by the development of Gyeongju, and only traces survive in places today. A survey in 1936 recorded a base width of 9.5 m, an outer wall height of 3.5 m and an inner wall height of 2 m. Given that it has no connection with Silla tomb clusters or with Banwolseong Fortress, that the Goryeosa records a fortification built at Gyeongju in 1012, that the Donggyeongjapgi records that in the reign of King Hyeonjong of Goryeo troops from the three provinces of Jeolla, Chungcheong and Gyeongsang were mobilised to build a stone embankment along Bukcheon Stream, and taking into account its present location and thickness, it is thought to have been an embankment built during Goryeo to prevent flood damage to the town wall. A partial survey in 1993 confirmed the stone foundation of the wall and a moat, a defensive feature designed to channel water artificially, raising the possibility that it formed the outer wall of a Goryeo-period town fortification.
