Odaesansago National History Archives, Pyeongchang
평창 오대산사고 · 平昌 五臺山史庫

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is one of the five national history archives (sago) built in the late Joseon period to store the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty and the Seonwonbo-ryak, the royal genealogical record. In the early Joseon period the Annals were kept at Chunchugwan in Seoul as well as in Chungju, Jeonju and Seongju, but the Japanese invasions of 1592 destroyed all copies except the one kept at the Jeonju archive. In the thirty-ninth year of King Seonjo (1606), the Annals were recompiled and archives were built to house them at Chunchugwan, Taebaeksan Mountain, Myohyangsan Mountain, Manisan Mountain in Ganghwa, and Odaesan Mountain. However, during the reign of King Injo the Chunchugwan copy was destroyed by fire in Yi Gwal's Rebellion (1624) and the Manchu invasion of 1636, after which the Annals came to be kept at Jeongjoksan Mountain, Taebaeksan Mountain, Jeoksangsan Mountain and Odaesan Mountain. The Jeongjoksan and Taebaeksan copies are now held at Seoul National University; the Jeoksangsan copy was lost during the Korean War; and the Odaesan copy was almost entirely destroyed by fire in Japan. The site of the Odaesan archive was said to be an auspicious place that water, fire and wind could not reach. When the archive was built it comprised the Sillokgak, which held the Annals, the Seonwongak, which held the royal genealogy, and an annex, together with Yeonggamsa Temple, the guardian temple that protected the archive; it was managed and guarded by two chambong, low-ranking custodial officials, sixty soldiers and twenty monks. All the buildings burned down during the Korean War, but in 1992 the archive was rebuilt with a Sagak and a Seonwonbogak, and it stands today. The name was changed from Odaesansagoji to Odaesansago National History Archives, Pyeongchang (announced 28 July 2011).
