These are Silla tombs on the flatland at Geumcheok-ri on the outskirts of Gyeongju, where some thirty tombs of various sizes cluster together. No full-scale excavation has yet been carried out, but two tombs that had been destroyed were investigated in 1952. Inside, each had the form distinctive to Silla known as a wooden-chamber tomb with stone mound (jeokseongmokgwakbun), made by digging a rectangular pit and installing a wooden chamber. Recovered relics include gold earrings and curved jade beads. All the tombs here are smaller than the flatland tombs within Gyeongju itself, suggesting they belonged to lower-ranking Silla nobility. According to legend handed down here, Park Hyeokgeose, the founder of Silla, hid a ruler made of gold that he had received from heaven by having some forty false tombs built, and it is said that it still lies buried among these tombs today.
