Outer City Wall, Buyeo
부여 나성 · 扶餘 羅城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe outer wall of Sabi runs eight kilometres from the east gate of the hill fort around the town and back to the river, using the ridges where it can. It was raised around 538 when the capital moved here, and along with the rampart at Pyongyang it is one of the two oldest city walls in Korea. It was built of earth and only traces remain, but the section that survives shows the technique: steep on the outside, gentle on the inside, with a track along the top wide enough to ride and guard posts at intervals. On the highest summit are a beacon platform and a building foundation. The river runs along the south and west, and channels were cut to complete the circuit — so the city was ringed by water as well as earth. This is the only surviving evidence of how Baekje laid out a capital as a whole.
