Jusanseong Fortress, Goryeong
고령 주산성 · 高靈 主山城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a Gaya-period mountain fortress built on Jusan, a mountain to the west of Goryeong, also known as Isanseong. Daegaya tombs are distributed along the ridge to the south of the fortress, showing its connection with the fortress. The fortress has a double wall: an inner wall built of earth in a rounded shape along the highest point of the mountain and the ridge to the east, and an outer wall about 700 m in circumference, built of stone in an oval shape starting from the eastern and western ends of the inner wall. Most of the wall has collapsed, but a solidly built section remains on the side facing the valley. At present the outer wall is overgrown with bamboo forest, making it difficult to make out its overall outline from a distance, and inside the fortress the sites of a well and of buildings remain. On a peak connected to the south-west of the outer wall there is another small attached fortress. Various fragments of Gaya pottery, of the kind excavated from the surrounding tombs, as well as relics from the Unified Silla, Goryeo and Joseon periods, have been excavated inside the fortress, showing that it was used over a long period. This mountain fortress, once the central stronghold of the old Gaya kingdom, has a long history, and provides important material for the study of the methods and structure of fortress construction at the time.
