Dalseong Fortress, Daegu
대구 달성 · 大邱 達城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a fortress of the Three Kingdoms period, built using a low hill on flat ground. Its height varies but is around 4 metres, and its circumference is about 1.3 km. Shell mounds and various artefacts from the early Iron Age were found at the base of the walls, suggesting that it was built as the central power of this region grew and took the form of an early state. Like Wolseong Palace Site in Gyeongju, it is characterised by its use of a low hill on flat ground. Dalseong Fortress is therefore regarded as a typical example of early fortress construction in the southern region of Korea. The walls were built mainly of earth, and large stone blocks are visible here and there on the upper section, suggesting later repairs. Within the fortress there were military storehouses until the early Joseon period, as well as a well and a pond. Many stone-chamber tombs are scattered across the hilly area connected to the south-west of the fortress, and artefacts including a gilt-bronze crown have been found in the tombs. Dalseong Fortress in Daegu is of great significance as representing the earliest form in the history of fortress development in Korea.
