Seongsansanseong Fortress, Haman
함안 성산산성 · 咸安 城山山城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a Three Kingdoms-period mountain fortress built of stone, with a circumference of about 1.4 km, on Seongsan, a mountain to the north-west of Haman; it is also known as Jonamsanseong. The exact date of construction is not known, but according to the Haman-eupji (Gazetteer of Haman), this mountain fortress is recorded as an old site of the Gaya kingdom, and the style of the fortress follows the Three Kingdoms-period pattern. On a low hill to the north at the foot of the mountain there are Gaya tombs, and considering the fortress's relationship with these tombs, it can be presumed to be a Gaya-related site. Seen from the north, Seongsan looks like an isolated hill; apart from a ridge continuing to the south-west, the remaining three sides all form a relatively steep mountain terrain. The interior of the fortress is a slightly hollowed, flat area, most of which is now cultivated as paddy and dry fields. Water flowing to the lowest point in the east forms a small valley outside the fortress. Near this point there is a gate site, and what appears to be another gate site remains in the western wall as well; apart from these, no other distinct facilities can be seen.
