Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis kiln site lies on a broad plain facing the coast by Gulpo Bay, spread mainly over an inner hill enclosed by an earthen rampart. There are about 40 sites in all, most clustered south of the road running east–west through Yucheon-ri, with a further ten or so on the slopes of a low hill to the north. They date mostly from the mid-12th century to the first half of the 13th century, with a few from the late 11th or early 12th century. The finest ceramic fragments come from around Kiln Site No. 12. The fragments found there show the highest grade of Goryeo ceramics, comparable in quality to those found at the Dangjeon village kiln site in Sadang-ri, Gangjin, while including a far greater quantity and variety of white porcelain and underglaze-copper white porcelain. The shapes found are varied, including dishes, wan bowls (for rice), bal bowls (for other food), maebyeong (flower vases), bottles and stemmed cups (for wine); in particular, maebyeong more than 1 m tall are outstanding in size, decoration and technique, revealing a new dimension of Goryeo ceramics. Inscriptions reading "Hyomun" and "Jocheong" have also been found, providing valuable material for the study of Goryeo ceramic history. Ranking just after the kiln sites of Daegu-myeon, Gangjin, in the quality of its materials and techniques, the Yucheon-ri kiln site is a highly important site that produced the finest ceramics for the Goryeo royal family and aristocracy.
