Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThese are the tombs of the ruling class of Seongsan Gaya, located around Seongsan in Seongju-gun, North Gyeongsang Province. Seongsansanseong Fortress stands on the summit of Seongsan, and more than 70 Gaya tombs are distributed around it. Tomb No. 1, 3.6 m high and 13.6 m in diameter, appears to have a side-entrance stone chamber (hoenggusik seoksilmyo) structure; the chamber contained a silver crown ornament, a ring-pommel sword (hwandudaedo) and various types of earthenware. Tomb No. 2 is a vertical-pit stone chamber tomb (suhyeolsik seoksilmyo), where spears, axes, knives and a large number of earthenware pieces were found. In the side chamber of Tomb No. 58, a thick gold ring earring, a silver bracelet and gilt-bronze horse trappings (leaf-shaped pendants) were found. The perforations in the stems of the mounted dishes (gobae) found in each tomb, and the crown ornament from Tomb No. 1, show similarities to those of the Gyeongju region. The relics from Tomb No. 58 are typical Silla products, and the tombs are presumed to belong to the Seongsan Gaya ruling class of around the fifth to sixth century. These finds are important evidence that Seongsan Gaya had a close relationship with Silla, while having no cultural exchange with the neighbouring Daegaya, which was hostile to Silla at the time.
