It was a fortress that served as an outer base for the defence of the capital during the Baekje period. Built atop Bongsusan Mountain, it is a mountain fortress about 3 km in circumference, believed to have been constructed by Baekje in preparation against invasions by Goguryeo. What remains today are the site of the fortress gate, a water gate beneath the gate through which a stream once flowed, and the sites of a well and buildings. The outer face of the walls was built by carefully dressing and stacking stones, while the inner side was dug out to form a ditch-like structure. The four corners of the fortress were also built about 2 m thicker than the rest to reinforce them. After the fall of Baekje, this fortress, together with Juryuseong Fortress, was a base of activity for the Baekje revival army, and it served as their last stronghold in the effort to recover Sabiseong Fortress. Heukchi Sangji led an attempt at Baekje's restoration from this fortress, but it ended in failure. It is also a site steeped in history, said to be where Wang Geon, King Taejo of Goryeo, and Gyeon Hwon fought a battle here during the Later Three Kingdoms period. This site was renamed from Daeheung Imjonseong Fortress to Imjonseong Fortress, Yesan, as officially announced on 28 July 2011.
