KOGL Type 4Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This is a stone fortress built around the summit of Sanseongbong Peak, 232 m above sea level; because it stands on Seonangsan Mountain it is also called Seonangsan Fortress. Most of it has collapsed, but a stretch about 2.6 km long and up to 1 m high survives. According to the Samguk sagi, there is a record that Silla built a fortress at Yangsan to defend against Japanese pirates (waegu) invading by way of the Nakdonggang River. Judging from this record and the discovery of fragments of Silla pottery inside the fortress, it is believed to have been built during the Silla period. To the south of this fortress stands Bukbu-dong Fortress, similar in scale, and together the two form a pair of twin fortresses. Scattered over Seonangsan Mountain are the sixth-century tombs of Singi-ri, famous for the Bubuchong Tomb of Yangsan, which suggests that this area was of great importance during the Silla period.
