Site of the Monument for the Victory at Hwangsan Battle, Namwon
남원 황산대첩비지 · 南原 荒山大捷碑址

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the site of a victory monument recording how Yi Seong-gye, who held the post of do sunchalsa (a provincial military inspector-general) at the end of Goryeo, defeated Japanese forces at Hwangsan. The Battle of Hwangsan is a historically celebrated victory, and to commemorate it for posterity a victory monument was erected in the tenth year of King Seonjo of Joseon (1577). When the monument was first erected, structures such as a stele pavilion and a guard building were built to protect it, but in 1945 it was destroyed by the Japanese, leaving only fragments. The present monument was newly carved and erected in 1957. In 1973 the stele hall housing the monument, together with the hongsalmun (a red spiked gate marking a sacred site), the three-gated entrance, the surrounding wall, and the ancillary buildings, were all newly refurbished. This site was renamed from Site of the Monument for the Victory at Hwangsan Battle to Site of the Monument for the Victory at Hwangsan Battle, Namwon, as officially announced on 28 July 2011.
