This is a tomb and shrine for the 700 soldiers who fought against Japanese forces during the Japanese invasion of 1592 (the Imjin War) and died a heroic death in battle. Jo Heon (1544–1592) was a righteous army commander who, after passing the civil service examination, served successively as a Jwarang in the Board of Taxation, a Jwarang in the Board of Rites, and an Inspector, and was then appointed magistrate of Boeun. Having been reappointed to office several times, he resigned, and when the Imjin War broke out he raised a righteous army of more than 1,700 men in Okcheon. Joining forces with the monk Yeonggyu, he recaptured Cheongju. He then went on to Geumsan to block the Japanese forces, and there, together with the 700 soldiers who remained, he fought valiantly in the Battle of Geumsan and died in the fighting. His posthumous title was Munyeol. After they died, Park Jeong-ryang and Jeon Seung-eop, disciples of Jo Heon, gathered the bodies and built a tomb; this is the Tomb of Seven Hundred Patriotic Martyrs. In the thirty-sixth year of King Seonjo of Joseon (1603), the Monument to the Righteous Martyrdom of Jungbong Jo Heon and His Army was erected, and in the twenty-fifth year of King Injo (1647), Jongyongsa Shrine was built to enshrine the spirit tablets of the 700 patriots. During the Japanese colonial period, the Japanese demolished the tomb and blew up the martyrdom monument, but the people of Geumsan hid and preserved the broken fragments of the stele. In 1971 the broken pieces were rejoined with cement and the monument restored, but in 2009 it was restored again using stone, and a new stele pavilion was also built. In 1963 the state extended the grounds of the tomb, and in 1976 a memorial hall and a tower to the righteous martyrs were newly built. This site was renamed from Tomb of Seven Hundred Patriotic Martyrs to Tomb of Seven Hundred Patriotic Martyrs, Geumsan, as officially announced on 28 July 2011.
