Yi Sun-sin passed the military examination, rose through a series of posts, and was appointed to command the Left Jeolla naval station shortly before the Japanese invasion of 1592. He spent the interval drilling his crews and building the armoured ships that would carry the war. He won at Okpo, Noryang, Dangpo and Hansando, and was shot in the last engagement of the war in 1598. His nephew took over the command and kept the death quiet until the fighting ended. He was buried first on Geumseongsan and moved to this hillside in 1614. Around the mound stand the offering table and incense stone, a pair of attendant figures, a pair of pillars and a pair of civil officials. In front is a stele of 1794 whose text King Jeongjo composed himself — two centuries after the war, and still the state's own verdict on the man.
