Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krIn the summer of 1592 Yi Sun-sin met a Japanese fleet in the water off this island and destroyed it, using a crane-wing formation that drew the enemy into open sea and closed on them. Hansando is counted with Haengju and Jinju as one of the three decisive victories of the war, and it was the one that reversed the situation outright. He then based himself here. From 1593 the headquarters of the combined naval command was on this island, and for the next three years he controlled the sea between Japan and the Korean grain provinces from it. Jeseungdang, the hall he built in 1592, stands on the site. He was posthumously made first among the war's meritorious officials in 1604, raised to chief state councillor, and given the honorific Chungmu — loyal and martial — by which most Korean streets named after him are actually named.
