Japanese raiders had been landing on this coast since the end of Goryeo, and between 1417 and 1421 the provincial military command was moved here and this wall was built around it. It held military authority over the region for 230 years until the command moved to Cheongju in 1652, after which the county offices took the site over. It was still a garrison headquarters in 1914. The wall stands on a low rise with a broad flat area inside it, and it is nearly complete — the best-preserved early Joseon town wall in the country. Look at the masonry: the largest stones at the bottom, smaller as it rises, about four metres high. It is also where Korean Catholics were held and executed during the persecutions of the nineteenth century. The tree they were tied to is still standing. What the gate means depends a good deal on who is walking through it.
