Jinjuseong Fortress
진주성 · 晋州城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krAn earth wall first, faced in stone in 1379 and extended with an outer circuit in 1591, the year before the war. In October 1592 the magistrate Kim Si-min held this fortress against a Japanese force of some thirty thousand with three thousand eight hundred men, and broke them. It is counted with Hansando and Haengju as one of the three decisive victories of the war. The following June they came back with a hundred thousand to settle it. The fortress fell, and roughly seventy thousand soldiers and townspeople died inside it. From the Chokseongnu pavilion you look down on the Nam river, and on the rock at its foot where Nongae is said to have held a Japanese commander and gone into the water with him. The provincial military command moved here in 1604 and stayed until 1895.
