Kiln Site in Cheonhwangsan Mountain, Ulju
울주 천황산 요지 · 蔚州 天皇山 窯址

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA yoji is a kiln site where pottery, roof tiles or other ceramic wares were fired. This is a white porcelain (baekja) kiln site located on a flat plateau among the peaks of Cheonhwangsan Mountain, comprising five or six kilns. Standing at the top of a rugged mountain over 1,100 m high, it is thought to be the highest-altitude kiln site in Korea. Most of the white porcelain fragments found here are pieces of bowls, rice bowls, small dishes, plates and cups; among the plate fragments, some have rims that curl inward and others that curl outward. This was a site where lower- to middle-grade white porcelain of no great quality was fired; alongside plain white porcelain, fragments decorated with black designs in underglaze iron have also been found. The underglaze iron designs are simple and unadorned, consisting of grass motifs or circular and dot patterns. The site is significant as a rare example, in an area close to the Gyeongsang-do coast, of a local mid-Joseon kiln producing underglaze-iron white porcelain.
