Samseonghyeol refers to the three holes from which the founding ancestors of the Go, Yang and Bu clans of Jeju Island are said to have emerged. The three founders are said to have lived by wearing animal skins and hunting for meat, until each married one of three princesses of Byeongnangguk, who arrived bringing the seeds of the five grains and calves and foals, after which they began a life of farming. The holes are arranged in the shape of the Chinese character 品; only one still connects to the sea, while the others survive only as traces. In the twenty-first year of King Jungjong of Joseon (1526), an altar and stele were erected for the performance of rites, and a fence was built around the site; rites are still held there every spring and autumn.
