Munsusanseong Fortress, Gimpo
김포 문수산성 · 金浦 文殊山城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krTogether with the garrison at Gapgotjin, this was a Joseon-period fortress guarding the entrance to Ganghwa. It is a stone-walled mountain fortress built in 1694, the twentieth year of King Sukjong, and rebuilt in 1812, the twelfth year of King Sunjo. It was solidly constructed of well-dressed stone, topped with a yeojang, a parapet built to shelter defenders. At the time it had three gate towers, including the Chwiyeru and Gonghaeru, and three amun, concealed gates used as secret passages. Of these, the Chwiyeru stood on the shore facing Gapgotjin and served as the gateway onto the mainland. Today the wall and gate towers along the shore have disappeared beneath a village, and only the section of wall running along the ridge survives. In 1866, the third year of Emperor Gojong, during the Byeonginyangyo, the French assault on Korea, this was the site of fierce fighting with French forces.
