Byeokjegwan, built in November 1476, the seventh year of King Seongjong, was the site of an official guesthouse for Chinese envoys visiting Korea. It was customary for envoys to spend a night here before entering Seoul the next day in proper ceremonial form. As the site also lay on an important route to China, Korean envoys travelling there would likewise stop to rest here. It was, notably, the site of the Battle of Byeokjegwan during the Imjin War, fought between the army led by the Ming general Li Rusong and Japanese forces. The guesthouse standing on the present site was built in 1625, the third year of King Injo, when Goyang County was relocated, and there is no clear record of later repairs. It was burned down during the Korean War, and only the site remains today. Byeokjegwan was the first post station on the main road leading to the Gwanseo region, and ranked second only to Mohwagwan, where the king personally welcomed and saw off Chinese envoys.
