Gochangeupseong Walled Town
고창읍성 · 高敞邑城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe town wall of old Gochang, also called Moyangseong after the Baekje name for the district. With the fortresses at Naju and Ipam it guarded the inland routes of the south-west. The date is uncertain — 1453 by one account, the late seventeenth century by another. The circuit is 1,684 metres, with three gates, three semicircular gate screens, six command platforms and a moat. Twenty-two government buildings once stood inside; most are gone. The gate towers have door pivots and slots of a kind rarely found in Joseon town walls and otherwise seen at much older sites. The thing to know is dapseongnori. Women walk the top of the wall with a stone balanced on the head — once for good health, twice for freedom from illness, three times for paradise — and they still do it every autumn. A wall was a village ritual as much as a defence.
