Gososeong Fortress, Hadong
하동 고소성 · 河東 姑蘇城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krGososeong is a stone mountain fortress built during the Silla period, its walls following the ridgeline in a shape close to a pentagon. No particular facilities have yet been identified inside the fortress, and the Hadonggun-eupji (Gazetteer of Hadong County) is the only surviving record of its history. Judging from this record and the fortress's location and scale, it is thought to have been built by Silla for military purposes. More recently, however, an alternative view has been put forward: that it is a Goguryeo-style fortress built in the early fifth century, when King Gwanggaeto of Goguryeo advanced south through Silla territory to subjugate Japanese forces. The walls were solidly built using a combination of squared, dressed stones and natural stone. The walls on the eastern, northern, western and southern sides survive almost intact, but the section overlooking the Seomjingang River to the south-west has largely collapsed, leaving only piles of stone. With the rugged ridges of Jirisan Mountain behind it and the Seomjingang River blocking the way in front, the fortress occupies a natural stronghold at a strategic point on the route from Namhae into the Honam region. It was built large and solid, making full use of this terrain.
