Archaeological Area in Eastern Gyeongju
KOGL Type 4Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This area, where numerous Silla-period historic sites are concentrated, was designated as a single unit for their preservation. From east to west, the Eastern Historic Area runs from Anapji Pond to Gyo-dong; from north to south, it runs from Namcheon Stream south of Wolseong Palace Site to Cheomseong-ro Road in front of Tumuli Park. Wolseong, Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond, Cheomseongdae Observatory, Gyerim Forest and others have each been designated individually as historic sites, but countless underground remains and artefacts continue to be unearthed in the spaces between them. The designation was therefore expanded, linking these sites together, in order to preserve the central area of the Silla capital. In addition to Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond, Wolseong Palace Site, Cheomseongdae Observatory, Gyerim Forest and the tomb of King Naemul, dozens of Silla tombs are also preserved intact within the area.
