Ancient Tombs in Pyeonggeo-dong, Jinju
진주 평거동 고분군 · 晋州 平居洞 古墳群

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThese are Goryeo-period tombs located halfway up Seokgapsan Mountain to the west of Jinju, surrounded by tombs of the Three Kingdoms period, Unified Silla and Goryeo. Beneath the long, rectangular earthen mound runs a square gapseok (the topmost stone of the platform base). Similar forms are found at the Gujeong-ri tombs in Gyeongju, the Goryeo-period Dunma-ri tombs in Geochang and various other tombs of the late Goryeo period, and the tombs of noted officials of the early Joseon period, representing a traditional form that continued steadily from Silla onward. These Goryeo tombs have been identified as a communal family burial ground of the mid-to-late Goryeo period. Because the names of the tomb occupants and the dates are carved into the stones, allowing the construction dates to be established, they form a rare body of evidence on the tombs of hojok, the local powerful clans of the Jinju region. (The name was changed from 'Jinju Pyeonggeo-dong Goryeo Tombs' to 'Ancient Tombs in Pyeonggeo-dong, Jinju', as officially announced on 28 July 2011.)
