Mural Tomb in Goa-ri, Goryeong
고령 고아리 벽화 고분 · 高靈 古衙里 壁畵 古墳

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is one of some ten tombs at the end of a ridge near Jusan Mountain in Goryeong, in which traces of mural paintings remain. It is a stone-chamber tomb with a horizontal entrance, covered by a mound about 25 m long east–west and 20 m long north–south, with an arched, domed ceiling. The grave goods are gone, having been looted, but in the burial chamber the wife's coffin was placed on the east side and the husband's on the west, with a drainage channel set into the floor. Slight traces of mural painting remain in the chamber, though their subject cannot be identified, while on the ceiling stone a lotus design was painted in pink, white, green and brown pigments. The method of constructing the ceiling and the floor drainage are similar to Baekje tomb-building practice, making this important evidence of Baekje cultural influence in the Gaya region. (Note: the name was changed from Goryeong Goa-dong Mural Tomb to Goryeong Goa-ri Mural Tomb, by notification of 28 July 2011.)
