Museongseowon Confucian Academy, Jeongeup
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This one honours Choe Chi-won, who lived in the ninth century, sat the Tang examinations in China, and served as magistrate here. That Joseon literati reached that far back for a founder says plainly what these academies were for: not only teaching, but claiming a line of descent. It began as Taesan Academy and received the name Museong from the king in 1696. Sin Jam, a sixteenth-century official, is honoured here too. The shrine dates from 1484, before the academy itself. The record room is the draw for anyone interested in how a seowon ran: attendance books, lecture registers, membership rolls and the house rules survive here from 1486 onward. It was one of the forty-seven left standing when the rest were closed in the 1860s.
