This was the house where Yun Seon-do, styled Gosan, lived, a building dating from the mid-15th century, first sited at Yeondong by Hyojeong (1476–1543), Yun Seon-do's great-great-grandfather. Behind the house stands Deogeumsan Mountain, and in front, on an auspicious site, are Byeorubong Peak and, to its right, Pilbong Peak. Passing through the main gate leads directly into the sarang-madang, the outer courtyard; the sarangchae (the men's quarters) faces onto it, and a small pond sits in the south-west corner of the wall. The sarangchae is in fact a house in Suwon, Gyeonggi-do, granted by King Hyojong to Yun Seon-do, which was moved to this site in the ninth year of King Hyeonjong (1668). Passing through the east gate behind the sarangchae, the anchae (the women's quarters) is arranged in a 'ㄷ'-shaped layout. One ancestral shrine stands within the east wall behind the anchae, and outside the wall stand Gosan Shrine, Eochoeun Shrine and others. At the entrance a gingko tree planted at the time symbolises Nogudang, and on the hill behind grows a dense forest of torreya trees over 500 years old, designated a natural monument. Held here are designated heritage items including the Self-portrait of Yun Du-seo (National Treasure) and the Sanjungsingok-jip (Treasure), together with the Eobusasisajip and some 3,000 other artefacts. With its anchae and sarangchae forming a 'ㅁ'-shaped layout and complete with a haengnangchae (a row of servants' quarters), Nogudang is a fine example of the form of an upper-class Joseon house. (The name was changed from 'Nogudan of the Haenam Yun Clan' to 'Nogudang House of the Haenam Yun Clan and Surroundings', as officially announced on 28 July 2011.)
