Tomb of King Heonan, Gyeongju
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This is the tomb of King Heonan (r. 857–861), the 47th ruler of Silla. His personal name was Kim Ui-jeong, and he was the half-brother of the 45th ruler, King Sinmu. His reign produced no particular notable achievements, though he worked to encourage agriculture, including the repair of embankments. According to the Samguk sagi, when the king died in the first month of 861 he was given the posthumous title Heonan and buried at a place called Gongjakji, though the location of Gongjakji is no longer known. The tomb takes the simplest of forms: a round earthen mound 4.3 m high and 15.3 m in diameter. Natural stones once formed a border around the base, but only a few now remain. The interior is presumed to be a tunnel-style stone-chamber tomb. Note: the name was changed from Silla Heonan-wangneung to Gyeongju Heonan-wangneung by notice dated 28 July 2011.
