Tomb of King Jinpyeong, Gyeongju
경주 진평왕릉 · 慶州 眞平王陵

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the tomb of King Jinpyeong (r. 579–632), the 26th ruler of Silla. King Jinpyeong set up new central administrative offices to consolidate independent royal authority. He also used diplomatic relations with China's Sui and Tang dynasties to fend off invasions from Baekje and Goguryeo effectively, and strove to defend the capital by repairing Myeonghwalseong Fortress in Gyeongju. The tomb is a round earthen mound 7.9 m high and 36.4 m in diameter. Natural stones once formed a border around the base, but only a few now remain. Its scale makes clear that this is a tomb of royal rank, and it is notable for standing in the middle of open plains. Note: the name was changed from Silla Jinpyeong-wangneung to Gyeongju Jinpyeong-wangneung by notice dated 28 July 2011.
