Tomb of King Hyogong, Gyeongju
경주 효공왕릉 · 慶州 孝恭王陵

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the tomb of King Hyogong (r. 897–912), the 52nd king of Silla. It is a round earthen mound tomb 5 m high and 21.2 m in diameter. A few stones that once protected the base of the mound survive, and the tomb otherwise has a very plain, undecorated form. According to the Samguk sagi, when the king died in 912 he was given the posthumous name Hyogong and was buried north of a temple called Sajasa. The Samguk yusa (Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms), however, gives a different account, stating that the king was cremated north of Sajasa and his remains buried beside a hillock at Gujije. A temple site south of the tomb today is presumed to be the former site of Sajasa. The tomb's official designation was renamed from "Silla Tomb of King Hyogong" to "Tomb of King Hyogong, Gyeongju" on 28 July 2011.
