This is the tomb of King Sinmu (r. 839), the 45th ruler of Silla. His personal name was Kim U-jing, and he was a cousin of King Huigang. In the fourth month of 839, with the help of Jang Bogo, commissioner of Cheonghaejin, he killed King Minae and took the throne, but died of illness later that same year. The tomb is a round earthen mound 3.4 m high and 15 m in diameter, with no surrounding facilities. According to the Samguk sagi, when the king died he was given the name Sinmu and buried northwest of Jehyeongsan Mountain, though it is not clear whether this refers to the present tomb. Note: the name was changed from Silla Sinmu-wangneung to Gyeongju Sinmu-wangneung by notice dated 28 July 2011.
