Chungnyeolsa Shrine for Im Gyeong-eop, Chungju
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This shrine was built to honour the loyalty of General Im Gyeong-eop, posthumously titled Chungmin (1594–1646). The shrine was erected in 1697, the 23rd year of King Sukjong, and in 1706 the general was granted the posthumous title Chungmin. In 1727, the third year of King Yeongjo, the shrine was named Chungnyeolsa. General Im Gyeong-eop was born in Chungju in 1594, the 27th year of King Seonjo, and won great merit in suppressing Yi Gwal's Rebellion in 1624, the second year of King Injo. During the Second Manchu Invasion of Joseon in particular, he rebuilt Baengmasanseong and Uiju fortresses to strengthen national defence, rendering great service to the country. Devoted to Ming China, the general tried to cooperate with Ming forces against the Qing when Ming came under Qing threat in 1642, the 20th year of King Injo, but the plan was discovered and he was captured by Qing forces. Qing made him various offers to win him over, but he never abandoned his resolve. In 1646 he was unjustly implicated in the domestic Sim Gi-won conspiracy case and was killed after harsh torture in prison. Today Chungnyeolsa Shrine displays articles once used by the general, and to the left in front of the shrine stands a stele honouring the unwavering fidelity of the general's wife, Lady Jeongbuin of the Wansan Yi clan. The site's official name was changed from Imchungmingong Chungnyeolsa to Chungnyeolsa Shrine for Im Gyeong-eop, Chungju, as announced on 28 July 2011.
