This is the tomb of King Gongyang (1345–1394, r. 1389–1392), the last king of Goryeo, and his consort, Queen Consort Sunbi of the No clan. King Gongyang was placed on the throne by Yi Seong-gye and others and was a king in name only. Immediately after the founding of Joseon he was banished to Wonju, and in 1394, the third year of King Taejo, he was killed at Samcheok-bu together with his two sons. In 1416, the 16th year of King Taejong, he was posthumously honoured with the title King Gongyang and a tomb was prepared for him in Goyang-hyeon. The queen buried with the king was the daughter of No Sin. She bore three princesses—Suknyeong, Jeongsin, and Gyeonghwa—and Prince Changseong, but was deposed along with the king after the fall of Goryeo. The tomb takes the form of twin mounds, each with a stele and a stone offering table in front, and between the two mounds stand a stone lantern and a stone tiger figure. The tiger figure shows the traditional style of Goryeo, yet is similar in style to those at the tombs of King Taejo and King Taejong, early Joseon royal tombs. Civil and military official statues stand on either side of the tomb, and the stone furnishings placed in front are generally simple in style and workmanship. The stele appears to be the one originally erected, but the marker stone inscribed 'Goryeo Gongyangwang Gorreung' (高麗恭讓王高陵) is known to have been erected during the reign of Emperor Gojong of Joseon. Tombs of King Gongyang are found not only here but also in the Samcheok area, where he was killed.
