Yungneung and Geolleung Royal Tombs, Hwaseong
화성 융릉과 건릉 · 華城 隆陵과 健陵

Prince Sado was executed in 1762 by his own father, who had him sealed in a rice chest for eight days. His son Jeongjo came to the throne fourteen years later, raised his father's title, and in 1789 moved the grave from a hill near Seoul to this one at Hwasan. He did the work with unusual care and unusual invention. The mound is ringed with carved screen stones bearing peonies and lotuses. The stone lantern combines the octagonal form of the early dynasty with the square form that appeared under Sukjong and Yeongjo into something new. The civil officials wear golden caps, a detail copied widely in the century that followed. Jeongjo is buried a short walk away with Queen Hyoui, in a tomb moved west from its first position on geomantic grounds. Father and son, and the road between Seoul and here, are the reason the city of Suwon exists in the shape it does.
