This fortress was built to guard against repeated foreign invasions after the Japanese Invasions of 1592 and the Second Manchu Invasion of 1636. It consists of an inner wall, a middle wall, and an outer wall, each built at a different time, with a garrison commander stationed inside to keep watch at all times. The military camps and provisions of Hayang, Sillyeong, Uiheung, Uiseong, and Gunwi belonged to this fortress, and the Chilgok regional garrison headquarters (Dohobu) also stood within its walls. The inner wall was built in 1640, the 18th year of King Injo, on the recommendation of the provincial governor Yi Myeong-ung, and the Chilgok Dohobu stood inside it. The middle wall was built in 1741, the 17th year of King Yeongjo, by the provincial governor Jeong Ik-ha under royal command, mainly for military defence. The most important facilities lie within the inner wall, while the middle wall holds storehouses for four counties, used to keep reserve grain for emergencies. The outer wall was built in 1700, the 26th year of King Sukjong, by royal order. Entry to the fortress is through the south gate of the outer wall, and many Silla-period temple sites, including Songnimsa Temple, remain in the surrounding area. Torrential rain in 1960 damaged the rainbow-shaped hongyemun gate above the entrance and destroyed part of the fortress wall, but the rest survives in its original form. Gasansanseong Fortress is a representative mountain fortress that clearly shows the construction techniques of the late Joseon period, making skilful use of steep natural terrain. The site's official name was changed from Gasansanseong to Gasansanseong Fortress, Chilgok, as announced on 28 July 2011.
