Dangseong Fortress, Hwaseong
화성 당성 · 華城 唐城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe fortress comprises two phases of construction: an earlier temoesik fortification encircling the summit of the mountain, and a later pogoksik fortification enclosing a valley. Today the sites of the east, west and north gates, a well site, an octagonal building site, and square and rectangular building sites have been identified. The Namyang region where Dangseong stands is now part of Hwaseong, but under Silla's King Gyeongdeok it was Dangeun-gun, and it played an important role as a route of communication with China. In 829, during the reign of King Heungdeok, the garrison of Dangseongjin was established here, and together with Cheonghaejin it was regarded as a key base for the Silla navy. The site is counted among the most important remains associated with the ancient stronghold of Danghangseong. A representative artefact is a roof-tile fragment inscribed with the character "Tang (唐)", presumed to relate to Dangseong-gun. A clay horse figurine excavated from the presumed site of a command platform demonstrates that rituals were held at Dangseong Fortress, Hwaseong, while fine white porcelain bowls from the Xing kilns of China found here show that the fortress served as a channel for foreign trade. The site's official name was changed from Dangseong Fortress to Dangseong Fortress, Hwaseong, by notification on 28 July 2011.
