Tomb of King Huigang, Gyeongju
경주 희강왕릉 · 慶州 僖康王陵

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the tomb of King Huigang (r. 836–838), the 43rd ruler of Silla. As his reign lasted only three years, no particular achievements are recorded of him. The Samguk sagi states that when the king died he was buried at Sosan, but the exact location is unknown. The tomb, 14 m in diameter and 3.4 m high, sits partway up a low hill. It is a round earthen mound whose base is broad relative to its height. It was long handed down simply as "a royal tomb", and it was identified as the tomb of King Huigang in the late Joseon period, a designation that continues to the present. Apart from its large size, the tomb closely resembles the tombs of commoners and has no other distinguishing features. The site's official name was changed from Tomb of King Huigang to Tomb of King Huigang, Gyeongju, by notification on 28 July 2011.
