Tomb of King Gyeongae, Gyeongju
경주 경애왕릉 · 慶州 景哀王陵

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the tomb of King Gyeongae (r. 924–927), the 55th king of Silla, who succeeded King Gyeongmyeong to the throne. In the fourth year of his reign, while holding a banquet at Poseokjeong Pavilion Site, he was attacked by Gyeon Hwon of Later Baekje and met a tragic end. The tomb lies within a pine forest at the entrance to Samneunggye Valley and, resembling an ordinary grave, has no particular distinguishing features. It is modest compared with other Silla royal tombs and has never been excavated. The Samguk sagi records that King Gyeongae was buried at Haemongnyeong on Namsan Mountain, but since Haemongnyeong lies some distance from this tomb, the two locations do not match; some hold the view that the tomb now identified as that of King Ilseong, which stands near Haemongnyeong, should instead be regarded as King Gyeongae's tomb. The name was changed from "Tomb of King Gyeongae" to "Tomb of King Gyeongae, Gyeongju" (notified 28 July 2011).
