예산 윤봉길 의사 유적 · 禮山 尹奉吉 義士 遺蹟

This is the place where Patriot Yun Bong-gil was born and grew up. The historic site contains separate houses for his birth and his upbringing: the house where he was born is called Gwanghyeondang, and the house in which he lived until he left for exile in China is called Jeohandang, meaning "the house that will save Korea." Yun Bong-gil devoted himself to absorbing new culture while working to enlighten and revive rural communities. He organised night schools and reading societies to campaign against illiteracy in the countryside, and in 1929 he founded the Woljinhoe association to promote rural development. In 1932, at a ceremony held in Hongkou Park in Shanghai combining the celebration of Tenchōsetsu, the Japanese Emperor's birthday, with the celebration of victory in the Battle of Shanghai, he threw a bomb—this was the April 29th Incident. Yun Bong-gil was arrested on the spot, sentenced to death, and died at the age of twenty-five. To honour his achievements, the state erected a memorial tower in 1965 and built Chunguisa Shrine in 1968. After this, his birth house and the house where he grew up were restored, and a relics exhibition hall and Buheungwon, the hall associated with his rural enlightenment campaign, were built from 1970 onward. Chunguisa Shrine, dedicated to Yun Bong-gil, holds his portrait, and the personal effects he used in daily life, designated as treasures, are displayed in the relics exhibition hall. In addition, Chunguigwan Hall was built to display a set of eleven paintings depicting his rural enlightenment campaign and the April 29th Incident, and is used as a site for historical education. Every year on 29 April, the Maeheon Culture Festival is held in his memory. The name was changed from "Maeheon Yun Bong-gil Historic Site" to "Historic Site Related to Yun Bong-gil, Yesan" (notified 28 July 2011).
