Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krIn the last month of 1598 the Korean and Ming fleets caught the Japanese withdrawing and fought the final engagement of the war in the strait off this headland. Yi Sun-sin was hit by a musket ball and died on deck. The water here is called Irakpa — the sea where Yi fell. The shrine facing it, Iraksa, was built with an altar and a stele by royal command in 1832. Two boards were hung in the grounds in 1965, one of them reading "a great star fell into the sea". The other three provinces have grander monuments to him. This one is where it actually happened, and it is quieter for it.
