Piramseowon Confucian Academy, Jangseong
장성 필암서원 · 長城 筆巖書院

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krFounded in 1590 in the home village of Kim In-hu, burned by Japanese troops in 1597, rebuilt in 1624, given its royal name-plaque by the king's own hand in 1662, and moved to this site ten years later. The layout is the usual study-then-shrine, but the lecture hall here faces the shrine rather than turning away from it — a small reversal, and one you will notice if you have walked two or three of the nine. You enter under Hwagyeonnu, a pavilion built to rest in, and the boards hanging through the compound were written by three of the most consequential scholars of the seventeenth century, Song Si-yeol among them. East of the shrine is Gyeongjanggak, holding books and documents that are themselves designated. Most date from the eighteenth century onward and are a primary source for how provincial education and provincial society actually worked.
