This is a well associated with the legend of the birth of Bak Hyeokgeose, the founder of Silla. Before Silla was established, the Gyeongju region belonged to Jinhan and was divided among six village chiefs. One of them, Lord Sobeol Dori, chief of Goheochon village, discovered a white horse kneeling and crying by a well at the foot of Yangsan Mountain. When he went to look, he found a large, glowing egg. When a baby boy was born from the egg, the villagers believed the child had been sent from heaven and raised him with great care. Because he was born from an egg shaped like a gourd (bak), he was given the surname Bak (朴), and because he was to bring light to the world, he was named Hyeokgeose (赫居世). In 57 BC, when the boy turned thirteen, he ascended the throne, founded the kingdom, and named it Seorabeol.
