Kiln Site in Namhyeon-dong, Seoul
서울 남현동 요지 · 서울 南峴洞 窯址

The kiln site in Namhyeon-dong, Seoul was discovered in April 1973, when large quantities of earthenware fragments were found mixed with burnt soil and ash. The fragments were mostly decorated with a lattice pattern, and because the site was recognised as the only Baekje-period kiln site known in the Seoul area, its importance was acknowledged and it was designated a historic site on 10 April 1976. However, a trial excavation carried out by the Seoul National University Museum in October 2006 revealed that the site was in fact a waste dump associated with a kiln of the Unified Silla period (9th century). As remains of this kind are rare in the Seoul area, the site has been judged to be of high value for preservation. It has also been suggested that a Unified Silla-period kiln site may exist on the hill surrounding this site. ※ The name was changed from "Sadang-dong Baekje Kiln Site" to "Kiln Site in Namhyeon-dong, Seoul" (announced 28 July 2011).
